JEE Main
The First Step to Prestigious Engineering Institutes
JEE Main is one of the most competitive entrance exams in India, conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering programs in National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other top engineering colleges across India. It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, which is required for admission into the IITs.
Conducted by: National Testing Agency (NTA)
Mode: Online (Computer-based Test) and Pen & Paper (for some cases)
Duration: 3 hours
Frequency: Twice a year (January and April)
Subjects Covered:
o Physics
o Chemistry
o Mathematics
Exam Pattern
o Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
o Numerical Value Questions (with negative marking)
o The exam consists of two papers:
Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech aspirants (computer-based).
Paper 2 is for B.Arch/B.Planning aspirants (pen-and-paper mode).
o Paper 1 has 75 questions in total, divided as follows:
Section A: 20 MCQs from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (with negative marking)
Section B: 5 Numerical Value questions from each subject (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) (with negative marking)
o Paper 2 consists of 82 questions (30 questions in Mathematics, 50 questions in General Aptitude, and 2 questions in Drawing).
Negative Marking
For MCQs in Section A, there is negative marking for incorrect answers (typically -1 mark per wrong answer).
For Numerical Value questions in Section B, there is also negative marking for incorrect answers (typically -1 mark per wrong answer).
Eligibility Criteria
Age Limit: Candidates must be born on or after October 1, 1999 (for general category students).
Number of Attempts: Candidates can appear for JEE Main for a maximum of three consecutive years.
Educational Qualification:
o Candidates must have passed their Class 12th or equivalent examination with at least 75% marks (or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards).
o For B.Arch, candidates must have completed Class 12th with Mathematics as one of the subjects.
Why JEE Main is Important:
Gateway to Top Engineering Colleges: JEE Main scores are used for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes).
Qualifying for JEE Advanced: A high rank in JEE Main is required to qualify for JEE Advanced, the entrance exam for the IITs.
National Recognition: JEE Main is recognized as one of the toughest entrance exams in the country, and a good rank can open doors to prestigious engineering institutes.
Preparation Tips
Understand the Syllabus: Start by understanding the complete syllabus of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Make sure you cover all topics, focusing on concepts and problem-solving techniques
Time Management: Practice solving questions under timed conditions to improve your speed and accuracy
Regular Practice: Solve previous years’ papers and mock tests to get familiar with the exam pattern and identify weak areas that need improvement
Focus on NCERT Books: For Chemistry, especially, focus on NCERT books, as they form the foundation for JEE Main.
